Watching Them
The Story Behind The Song

All of the people running around.
Never looking, never hearing,
Never aware of what's going on down.
Keeping abreast of the latest in trends.
Always believing that their ugly means justify their loose ends.
And I'm just watching them, watching them through my window.
Watching them, watching them in the light.
Watching them, watching them where do they go?
Watching them, watching them move into the night.

Up every morning, they've got somewhere to go.
They've got to get the power, keep the schedule,
Always provide a very fine show.
They're keeping a good face, oh, they're playing charades.
Ignoring the feelings that they feel in their souls
As they join the parade.
And I'm just watching them, watching them through my window.
Watching them, watching them in the light.
Watching them, watching them where do they go?
Watching them, watching them move into the night.

Grown-up pretenders, oh, they move in a daze.
Never smile, never touch, never see, oh, beyond their blue haze.
Grim, tight-lipped faces, a void in (avoiding?) their eyes.
Moving toward something that they never thought
Would become their blue skies.
And I'm just watching them, watching them through my window.
Watching them, watching them in the light.
Watching them, watching them where do they go?
Watching them, watching them move into the night.

Watching Them Back Story

Ages ago, I was walking against the tide of Red Line T morning commuters when I suddenly realized how theirs was a life that would never fit me - nor I into it. For someone who had spent a lifetime trying to live up to the cardinal WASP rule "Thou shalt, above all, fit in." this was no less than a complete revelation. It was a small step to realize that I was different and it would be many years before I fully realized how truly different I was. But it was a start. After this revelation, I started watching and trying to understand all those people who were spending their lives "fitting in". What I saw is now in this song.
