Workin'
The Story Behind The Song

I'm much too young to be workin' overtime
Watching the clock & working for another man's dream.
Oh, but I don't mind sometimes,
I swear I'll change this scene one day.

I'm not too blind to see the way things really are
Take what you get & pray for another day's way.
Oh, it brings me down, you know,
When it makes me feel this way.
Just like I'm workin', workin' my life away.
Don't wanna be workin', workin' my life away.
Workin' my life away...

I can't begin to see where I lost the time.
Didn't hear the gun but now I'm ten years down the line.
But on days like today, you know
It only seems it was a day.
Because like I'm workin', workin' my life away.
Oh, yeah, I'm workin', workin' my life away.
Workin' my life away...

Life just goes rushing by.
It's not as good or bad as we'd like it to be.
No time for wondering why.
But, babe, I haven't given up, given up on my dreams.

I'm much too young to be workin' overtime
Watching the clock & working for another man's dream.
Oh, but I don't mind sometimes,
I swear I'll change that scene one day.
I won't be workin', workin' my life away.
Don't wanna be workin', workin' my life away.
Workin' my life away...

Workin' Back Story

This is one of those rare songs that started with the music. At the time, I was teaching music & so played piano much better than I do now. One day, there appeared that opening bass & marimba line. I think many workers in America could have penned the words...we've all felt them.
